New! First winner.

The first award has been made from the endowment to Dr. Candace Marsters, M.D. Ph.D. Congratulations!

A memorial award for the future of
neuro-oncology.

Who was Wajid?

A loving son, brother, husband, and father, Dr. Wajid Mohammed Hussain Sayeed, MD, was a neuro-oncologist and neurologist at the Cross Cancer Institute and the hospital of the University of Alberta. In addition to treating patients, he was also active in clinical research. You can see his scientific publications here and learn more about his life and work here and here.

In the winter of 2020, at the age of 35, he passed away himself from a glioblastoma multiforme tumour, an aggressive cancer of the central nervous system.

Wajid was passionate about expanding and advancing patient care and research into brain tumours.

Help us continue his legacy.

The award.

Under the auspices of the University of Alberta, Wajid’s family and colleagues are joining forces to create an endowment to give an annual award to a neurology resident interested in working in the field of neuro-oncology.

The award will be a long-term investment in continuing Wajid’s work in improving brain cancer care in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and the world.

A devastating diagnosis.

A number of different kinds of tumours affect the central nervous system. Malignant gliomas in particular are considered uniformly fatal, with the most aggressive of them giving a life expectancy measured in months. There is a need for more specialist training, more research, and more care for patients.
